Shaping Healthier Futures
Working with government
Ingredients for growthWe support government’s ambition for a comprehensive food strategy to effectively drive change.
We believe, with the right policy levers, we can drive investment into the UK and create the most competitive and dynamic food and drink sector in Europe.
Government can support food and drink manufacturers to accelerate this work by:
Supporting SMEs
Establishing a reformulation programme to support SMEs based on the Reformulation for Health Programme in Scotland.
Supporting investment
Supporting reformulation investment by expanding access to existing R&D tax credits, grants and capital allowance schemes.
Supporting behaviour change
Launching a new public health campaign with positive, practical messaging to support consumer behaviour change.
Supporting data reporting
Developing mandatory health metrics in collaboration with industry and others to support transparent data reporting.

Our members produce a wide variety of products
Food and drink manufacturers provide a range of healthy products including fruit and veg and everyday staples. Here are some interesting facts about our members’ contributions to healthy balanced diets.
Creating healthier recipes
Consumers are at the heart of the innovation journey.
When we develop new recipes, we put the consumer at the heart of that development and that forms the basis for how we innovate.
This consumer-led focus, together with following government regulations and understanding the scientific principles behind our decisions, is vital. So, when we talk about creating healthier products, it is paramount that we take the consumer on that journey with us, as ultimately, they determine the success of a product.
A whole-systems approach
The UK’s food and drink manufacturing sector is a cornerstone of our national economy and a vital part of communities across every region of the country.
It is at the heart of a food and drink supply chain worth £155bn to the economy and employs almost 4.2 million people. Taking a whole-systems approach is essential to making the most impact.
Action on Fibre
A balanced diet is not all about cutting back on certain foods or nutrients. In 2021, we launched ‘Action on Fibre’ to help bridge the gap between fibre intakes and the dietary recommendation.
In the last year alone, this has resulted in 134 new products and 17 reformulated products being brought to the market that are a source of or high in fibre, delivering 190 million additional servings of fibre to the population.
FDF Scotland's Reformulation for Health Programme
Our FDF Scotland Reformulation team is helping small to medium sized food companies to reformulate their products, with support available for both FDF members and non-members.
The Reformulation for Health programme is funded by the Scottish Government and we work with a range of partners to help businesses access support and funding.
