The FDF have developed a range of guidance and resources, covering four key topic areas. Explore each topic below.

Allergens labelling & management

The FDF assists the UK food industry through its provision of a toolkit and technical guidance on allergen labelling and management. We also support progress towards agreement of allergen reference doses to enable quantitative risk assessment for food allergen management.

Food labelling

Food information to consumers, primarily shared via the product label, must not mislead and the food label itself is the primary means of providing essential information to consumers.

Food safety

Ensuring food is safe is paramount. Food and drink products are highly regulated across the UK to ensure their safety and authenticity. The FDF maintains an open dialogue with UK regulators to ensure that members are alert to potential food safety incidents or authenticity issues, as well as cross-cutting food safety policy, so they can respond swiftly to emerging risks to protect consumers.

FDF has developed toolkits for businesses, covering a wide range of topics on food safety and regulation.

Incident prevention & management

The FDF Incident Prevention and Management toolkit signposts to key resources, best practice and intelligence to support members in ensuring they remain alert to potential food safety incidents and food fraud issues and respond swiftly to emerging risks to protect their businesses and consumers.

Regulatory toolkit

The FDF Regulatory toolkit provides members with a comparative overview of food law at GB and EU level now the UK is no longer part of the EU. It hosts several FDF Regulatory Trackers which capture policy developments and areas of regulatory divergence between GB & EU/NI legislation.

The FDF Allergens toolkit provides members with an overview of key resources relating to allergen labelling and allergen management. It covers the 14 regulated food allergens and signposts to best practice guidance to support industry compliance.

The FDF food labelling toolkit provides members with an overview of relevant legislation and resources on food information to consumers. It signposts to key guidance on the various areas of labelling policy, from origin to nutrition and supporting information on enforcement.

Nutrition & health claims

The FDF nutrition and health claims toolkit provides members with an overview of relevant legislation and resources on both nutrition claims and health claims. It signposts to the official resources to check if claims have been authorised and key guidance to support substantiation and labelling.

Origin labelling

The FDF Origin Labelling toolkit provides members with an overview of relevant legislation and resources on country of origin labelling. It signposts to key information on mandatory origin labelling rules for specific foodstuff and the interpretation of primary ingredient origin labelling requirements.

The FDF Food Contacts Materials toolkit provides members with resources and information relating to substances and materials that come into contact with food and drink. It covers the relevant legislative framework, including plastics, that ensure contact materials remain safe to use.

Acrylamide

The FDF Acrylamide Toolkit provides members with key resources and legislative developments on the process contaminant acrylamide. It covers acrylamide formation and key mitigation measures available across a variety of foodstuffs which help prevent and reduce its formation in food production.

Novel foods

The FDF Novel Foods toolkit provides members with key resources and guidance on new food ingredients that due to their lack of historic consumption would require market authorisation (e.g. CBD and insects). It covers the relevant legislation and information on the application process.

The FDF Nanotechnology toolkit provides members with key resources and information on the evolving science, opportunities and regulatory considerations of nano-sized particles in food. It covers the relevant legislative frameworks and emerging applications in the food chain.

Codex Alimentarius

The FDF Codex Alimentarius toolkit provides members with an overview of how Codex operates as the international food standards body. It covers how Codex's global standards and guidelines are developed and support international trade and the opportunities different stakeholders have to input in to this process.
